Farm Project
The North Star Café and Farmstay is a social enterprise run by the NGO “BAAN DOI – Home and Healing Center for Children (baandoi.org). It is located at the North Star Organic Farm and has been build up in cooperation with the project BASEhabitat, architecture for change, University of Arts Linz, Austria (basehabitat.org) and our permaculture teacher Mr. Sandot Sukkaew from Sahainan permaculture farm, Nan, Northern Thailand (sahainan.org).
Next to caring for children in need and caring for the community we also care for the environment and the protection of nature. We wanted to create a space, in which our children and families learn and practice how to grow their own organic food. At the same time, we intended to create living and working space for young people.
That’s how the project found its way into existence, it has been planned and build up from 2019 to 2025 by turning a regular rice field into a diverse organic farm. The property is used to fulfill different functions such as the paddy fields for rice production (40%), the water bodies (12%), housing and workshop space (22%) and vegetable, forage and fruit gardens (26%).
The buildings at the farm have been carefully planned and constructed by using natural materials like clay bricks and renewable resources like bamboo, which give them a special touch and comfortable atmosphere.
