Banana Tree

Banana trees are incredibly valuable on our farm—not just for their fruit, which we enjoy along with our chickens and ducks, but for the many useful parts they provide.

The banana flower can be cooked in soups, curries, or salads; the leaves are perfect for wrapping or steaming food; and even the trunk can be eaten after boiling. The roots are used in traditional medicine, while the sap can treat burns or be made into natural adhesive.

Although each stalk dies after fruiting, the base (corm) continues to produce new growth, allowing the cycle to continue.

We also use young banana trees to make Effective Microorganisms (EM) to enrich the soil and support our ecosystem.

During Thailand’s Loy Krathong festival, we craft banana stems and leaves into floating “krathongs” to give thanks and offer apologies to the water each year.
