Lemongrass

We grow two types of lemongrass on our farm, one for cooking and one commonly used for medicine. Both help protect our fields thanks to their strong scent and the citral and citronella oils that insects dislike. As lemongrass roots and leaves decompose, they support soil microorganisms that break down nutrients and make them more available to nearby crops. Its thick, fibrous roots also help hold the soil together, making it useful for planting along field edges or slopes to reduce erosion during heavy rain. Some of our favourite dishes that use lemongrass include khua haeng gai, tom yum, tom kha, and various curries. You’ll also find lemongrass in many insect repellents!
